Avengers
I watched Iron Man 1 and 2 on Sunday - wow, in the rush of "OMG! Clint/Natasha 4ever!" I forgot how much I ship Happy/Natale. That whole bit in the car, then his insistence on helping with the attack... he's like a puppy who just wants her to love him.
Stargate
So right around Christmas I started watching Stargate: SG1; I am now halfway through season two and I have questions.
Twice now Teal'c has gone back to his home planet to rescue his wife and son (the second time even bringing them back to Earth just to get them away from the BigBad) yet as soon as that bout (or should I say episode) of danger is over with he sends them back - WHY?!
If BigBad can kidnap and brainwash your son once, what would keep him from doing it again? Really, just bring the family over and move Teal'c into family housing.
Hunger Games
I saw a promo still from the new movie and my first thought was "who is that creeper breathing on Katness", then I found out it was Finnick and I was sad. When I read the book I pictured Finnick kind of like LL Cool J, but with a swimmer's build (Annie I thought of as a young Halie Berry, and the old lady who takes her place as the grandma from Mulan).
Les Miserables
If you haven't seen it yet, wait for the DVD.
The reason you make a movie musical is to do things that can't be conveyed through other forms. The opening of each act were perfect in this regard; truly epic, with a scope you can not show on stage. But for the rest of the movie... If I want to see a close-up of a person singing directly to camera I'll watch youtube.
A lot of hype was made over the new song written for the movie; again, I was disappointed. The melody didn't fit with the other themes of the show and it did nothing to reveal new information or move the plot forward, so what it ended up as was a very pretty sounding time suck.
Which leads me to my third disappointment - the shortening or out right cutting of songs.
I saw the movie with my mother, someone who had no knowledge of the musical, and through out the second act she kept asking questions about plot points or character motivation. On the drive home I played her the OLC recording, "Oh, that makes much more sense." she said.
Because of this rearrangement, the sacrifices of both Éponine and Gavroche become almost pointless, the presence of Thénardier in the sewer is totally meaningless (as is his motivation for taking Marius' ring), and the ending becomes disjointed.
Now, contrary to almost all of my friends (most of whom are acting/musical theater/music majors and more then a few who have been on broadway) I liked Russell Crow's Javert. While Jackman's Valjean was a sobbing mess of self-doubt and insecurity, Crow's Javert was a solid, steady presence that moved through the plot with a single minded purpose. He may not have shown the emotional range that Jackman did, but it wasn't needed. As Javert states, "I am the law" and, to quote Aristotle, "The Law is reason free from passion".

Date: 2013-01-15 07:11 pm (UTC)+ mostly because even Dreyak thinks Teal'c is a traitor. And with the amount of love he's getting outside the SCG (aka NONE), there's no place for them on Earth.
But, it also makes for various Teal'c episodes. ;)

Date: 2013-01-18 07:31 pm (UTC)The only people who want Teal'c there (on base) are Hammond and SG-1. There was a discussion about having the family there (can't remember which episode) but it got a swift 'Hell no' from the higher ups. He's effectively a prisoner of Cheyenne Mountain until the episode with Erica.
