Today I put the photoshoping skills that I have picked up over my time doing fandom stuff to use for Real Life business stuff and made a cover photo for my FB midwifery page.

After a super long break, I'm back with a new midwifery vlog post!

I have no problem fund raising for other people. Give me someone trying to raise money for a trip, or medical bills, or whatever, and I have no problem going up to anyone and talking them into donating something.

But turn the tables and asking for myself? I become petrified. Why would anyone want to give me money.

So here I am, screwing up my courage and putting myself out there...

I need $2,000 to attend the Midwifery Today conference. This will cover the conference fee, a hotel room, travel costs, and food. If you want to help out, stop by my Go Fund Me page or feel free to signal boost.

Forget everything I said in the last post - I'M IN!!!

Kansas here I come!

(also, if anyone knows of somebody in the Leavenworth area that would be willing to trade a spare room for housework and cooking, please point them in my direction.)

SO I guess I'm updating once a month now?

The apprenticeship continues to go well; I've been moving through the skill testing portion and am taking on more responsibility - I even helped with a catch (it was hour 26 and we didn't think mom was ready to push so I was left alone, then I started to see the head and was stuck in a spot where I couldn't move)!

One of the reasons I haven't been spend much time on LJ is because this program has a tuition, which I've been trading for yard work. It works out to 13 hours a week that I have to fit in around prenatals and births, so my free time has gone down to almost zero.

However... you could help me get back some of that free time! I've posted a crowd-funding campaign to help raise the cost of one year of apprenticeship.

I'm also trying to keep up with a video blog about my time in Utah.

After talking with my course coordinator and several other students, and a LOT of praying, I think my best course of action is to switch over to independent study. This will give me more time to finish the course work, but I will change from a Texas Agency candidate to a Portfolio-Evaluated-Process (or PEP) student in regards to the NARM exam (the big exam that gets you the final licensing approval).

So more work on the practical side but more time to do it; while getting less stress on the educational side - I'd call that a fair trade.

It also means that the restrictions fora preceptor are loosened, so I'm going to start calling midwives I may have had to pass over before.
nestar: (Brain Loading)
Hey there LJ, I'm still alive!

There's not much to report, school and birth center and housework and more school and a few births and more school.

I've got a blog strictly for posting about apprenticeship/midwifery/birth type things at: and I've done two posts in the last weeks.

The learning curve of the new apprenticeship/birth center/family/town has left me almost zero time for anything else. I haven't even thought about watching TV in over a week - although I have kept up on The LBD and I have thoughts on the vilification of Caroline (not a new thing in JA adaptions/fanfic) and the tap dance the writers are doing trying to tie everything up, but I have no time to lay these thoughts out in a coherent manner.

So that's my new life - very monotone, very focused, very lonely.

I finally heard back from the midwifery practice that I interviewed with.

I'm in!

So this means that I'll be moving to Houston in a few weeks. I have dozens of little details swirling through my brain. I have to get the cruse control fixed on the car, will I really need to bring my thick winter coat, should I try and get my yearly check ups done before I go or should I find a new doctor down there and do it in the fall? I need to get boxes.

Yeah, so that's my new crazy.

'Shire Thing #8 - While there are trees EVERYWHERE in New Hampshire, they are all new growth. I knew that it was timber from the colonies that built the amazing navy that made Great Britain a superpower, but I didn't realize that almost all of New England had been clear cut to do so.

On The Writing Front - "Cylon of the Opera" (and I really need a new title for it) will be probably end up being a three part epic. Today I wrote a scene which tied my two chunks together, meaning I have 2/3 of the first part written.

And now I'm starting to doubt the whole thing.

I have really messed with Kara's back story and am changing how she copes with things, playing up the religious side (which I am making up or pulling from the Battlestar Wiki because I've never seen "Caprica").

But what if I've changed her too much?

Starbuck is a kick-ass, take-no-shit, kind of woman, Christine Daae was an immature girl who always had a strong male presence in her life to rely on. Forget apples and oranges, these two are apples and staircase carpet.

On The Baby Front - We've had 3 of the 6 babies so far, with two babies due anytime (our biggest fear is that they'll go at the same time).

I won't say that yesterday was bad, but it sure was long.

It started at 2:00am with a call to a birth. The baby was born at 2:58am and I was home by 6:00. I got a two hour nap, a shower, and then left for a meeting with a client about postpartum work.

Then came the really long part of the day. My Midwife's sister needed to move her cat from Boston, so I was asked if I would mind driving them. Sure I said. Hour there, hour back, easy I said. And I was right, getting there took an hour and was easy.

(Side Note: I got off at exit 26 and my first thought was "Boston smells like popcorn".)

Then we started to make our way towards Concord -- along the entire Redneck population of New England.

Apparently it's NASCAR weekend in Loudon.

It took me nearly FOUR hours to get home.

My next exam is March 15, but the 14th will be a travel day, so I have 25 days left.

I still have to do:
3 3-6 page info booklets to write and format
1 rough draft of the Complications project
197 Questions spread over 8 worksheets (which works out to 8 questions a day)

I can do this.

I can do this.

I boy, I really need to do this.

Saw this while driving this morning: "Shaffer's Lawn and Handyman Service - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap".

I attended a birth yesterday that had a couple heart quickening moments - nothing bad, but you always have the extreme worst running through the back of your mind.

I joined up with [ profile] thebluebox_lims and you can too!

Artist claims went up at [ profile] het_bigbang and I snagged two, one is Due South, Ray K/Thatcher and the other is NCIS:LA, Kensi/Deeks. I've already made up half a dozen Ray K/Thatcher iocns, but then I've been excited about that story since the first snippet post.

And lastly, I've been reading fic.

A Line Written to Your Summer Dress by [ profile] fated_addiction
Glee | Jesse/Rachel | general spoilers | PG
he told her once they’ll be parallel lines. this is the truth though: it’s never that long.

The Cutting Edge by [ profile] taragel
Battlestar Galactica | Kara/Lee | AU | PG-13, Mild allusions to child abuse
She’s fire. He’s ice. They just might be the perfect match.

Holmes vs. Harkness by [ profile] kikainausagi
Torchwood, Sherlock | Jack, Mycroft | First season TW | PG-13 for brief swearing and mild innuendo
Mycroft has Jack kidnapped for a nice little chat about Torchwood's financials, among other things. Various other characters make appearances, but for once, Captain Jack Harkness doesn't get any.

Okay, I am now starting to really freak out about the upcoming exam. I still have two and a half lessons to finish (by Friday) and stupid me - I looked at the review lesson.

I don't have to do it, but if I do I'll get 5 points towards the exam - which I might need. Right now my biggest freak out is the fact that spell has always been my weak point and what if I can't spell the words I need for the test?

Day 01 - What is your current favorite ship?
Day 02 - What was your very first ship?
Day 03 - A pairing that needs to happen now?
Day 04 - The pairing with the most chemistry?
Day 05 - The pairing with the least chemistry?
Day 06 - Best kiss?
Day 07 - The most heartbreaking scene?

Day 08 - The pairing with the most baggage?
Robin/Barney “How I Met Your Mother”

Where to start? They both have massive daddy issues. Robin's spring from not living up to her father's (impossible) standards, while Barney is dealing with not having that presence at all.

Robin struggles with her self-image – she feels guilty that she has no interest in a babies or a husband or whatever else she's told herself is what a woman should want.

Barney has a massive fear of abandonment – his father left him when he was small, then the girl he was in love with stomped on his poor, hippy, heart (Think about it, if Shannon hadn't been a bitch then Barney = Marshall. Mind blown, right?)

I think the reason that Barney/Robin failed as a couple the first time around was that they were trying to fit themselves into the mold of what they thought a “real, normal” couple should be (I love Lily, but the whole “you have to define the relationship” thing was the beginning of the end, IMHO ). I really think that they will end up together, but no matter how much they grow it won't be in a traditional way.

I spent last night with old friends - ones I have known for ages and ones that I haven't seen in ages.

Right now I have a mug of brewed in a pot tea and 2011 is looking pretty good (even if I just got an e-mail from my teacher saying I only got a 79 on my last assignment).

Last week [ profile] marcasite posted this meme on her journal and now I am shamelessly copying it.

Fic of 2010... )

I've got a new post up at Yankee Midwife talking about two new births I'm going to attend. Check it out!
nestar: (N&S Green Dress)
Dear friends,

I've just begun training to become a midwife. This is something that really fills my heart with joy at just the sound of the word. Midwife.

I have the dream and the drive, what I am lacking is the money.

Please take a few minutes to check out the donation page on my website -

Maybe you can buy a textbook, maybe you can send $10.00 a month, maybe you can pass the link on to your friends, everything helps. Really, it does.

Thank you for just reading this post.

With all my gratitude,

April 2017
