This came over the AE-e list, just an awesome thought. (I did edit out the names from this)
My husband and I had a following discussion with our 7th grader at
dinner last night:
"What did you draw on the top of your hand?"
"An escarbuncle."
"Why?"
"I was bored. BUT I am not the only one! I taught a bunch of other kids
how to draw an escarbuncle, and I told them it's the symbol for the kingdom
of Aethelmearc and they are in it *right now*! So they drew it on their
hands too. And then they taught how to draw it to their friends, and now a
lot of kids have an escarbuncle on their left fist. When we walk down the
hall, we make a fist and raise it to show our escarbuncle to others who have
an escarbuncle too, and they return the salute. And not only seventh
graders; it's spilling into the eight and ninth grade, too!"
We paused in conteplation, then I asked.
"What else did you tell them?"
"Well...they are all singing the song."
"What song?"
"We are the escarbuncle
The boss on the shiled
The wood may splinter
we never shall yield..."
(and here I admit my daughter knows the lyrics better than I do :-)
And this is how a humble SCA concept crosses the boundary and permeates into
all strata of the Junior High, where kids from all social and anti-social
groups draw it on their hands and draw strenght from the fact that they are
the escarbuncle, the boss on the shield, the wood it may splinter but they
never shall yield and bad test grades, nasty kids, nasty rumors, peer
pressure, demanding teachers will all be warded off by this worthy talisman.
